William Howard died here and was buried on the farm of Annie Crickenburger. I believe sometime in the 1940’s her elderly son identified the location of the grave so the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) could place the current marker. There was a small ceremony officiated by the UDC and the park superintendent.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15898206.post-79780970340807168192021-04-19T05:51:18.780-04:002021-04-19T05:51:18.780-04:00It is April 2021 and I visited the grave of Willia...It is April 2021 and I visited the grave of William Howard by accident. The hillside is totally grown up, but there is a short path to the marker. I thought it was an animal trail, and it may be as there were deer hoof prints in the soft dirt. The marker has been cleaned. It is nice to know the history. The wild flowers along Brown's Gap Road were really out this year!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15898206.post-33922327723849525322021-02-14T16:01:38.813-05:002021-02-14T16:01:38.813-05:00I’m doing my ancestry and my ancestors are the How...I’m doing my ancestry and my ancestors are the Howards of Fluvanna Virginia. We descend from Benjamin Howard of Buckingham county b. 1730, and his father Allen Howard founder of West Cote and Howardsville in Albermarle county, Virginia. Both men were Revolutionary War veterans.William Howardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02821526238967426111noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15898206.post-28229844022867680562018-11-07T17:50:22.895-05:002018-11-07T17:50:22.895-05:00Thanks for posting this info. During the War, William Howard, showed up at her house very ill. She took care of him until his death shortly thereafter. She buried him just below her house on the east side of the Gap along Browns Gap Road in an unmarked grave. After the establish of the Shenandoah National Park, some of her descendants, who knew where he was buried, erected a marker at his grave site. Near the end of the War, Stonewall Jackson declared Browns Gap Turnpike a "free road" and Mrs. Crickenburger moved off the mountain to a small town south of Grottoes on Rt. 340. Breastworks from the war efforts still exist on either side of Skyline Drive at Browns Gap.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15703132547473124837noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15898206.post-45391902228931052072014-04-21T12:36:49.649-04:002014-04-21T12:36:49.649-04:00Very interesting post! There are likely a number of those graves along the various trails in the Blue Ridge, though many of them are probably no longer marked.Richard G.
